Types of Bad Bit.ly Links to Report
Bitly is a great link shortening service that allows anyone to not only shorten a long or difficult to type web address but also allows people to track information related to the clicks of bitly links. However there is no shortage of bad people that use bitly for bad things including:
- Deceptive phishing emails. Emails with Bitly phishing links include but are not limited to fake Paypal emails indicating saying your Paypal account will be limited until we hear from you. Other limited account scare emails have Bitly phishing links as well. Fake bank and/or credit card emails are common.
- Deception or inaccurate links in social posts such as a Bitly link in a YouTube description that says the link goes to a web address that it does not.
How To Report A Bad Bit.ly Link
To report a bad or deceptive Bitly link to Bitly email them at Report Bitly Abuse. Clicking that link will open your default email program with the Bitly abuse email report address and subject line already filled out. The idea is to make sure the subject line of the email includes the word spam or abuse. In the body of the email try to be specific about the Bitly link you are reporting and include:
- How or where you came upon the bad Bitly link. Did you get a phishing email? If so, copy and paste the entire contents of the email into the body of the email you are sending to Bitly. If it was a web page, include the url of the webpage and where the link can be found.
- Any other information that will help Bitly investigate and take action.

The link takes you to what looks like Virginmedia's log in page. After logging in you are taken to a bank details form which asks for bank account number, debit Card number, expiry date sort code, and security code. Then asks for name, date of birth and mother's maiden name.
