  4. Select a Predefined Time Range: Search volume for a keyword phrase can vary over time and be affected by the time of the year. Some keywords more than others. For example, keywords with the word Christmas in them are obviously going to have a lot higher search volume in the late fall that during the spring. This is called Keyword Trends. Because of this, you need to let the Bing keyword research tool know when you want search volume statistics pulled from. This is selected via a drop down box that contains three choices:
    1. 3 Months (Monthly keyword search volume is shown and averaged out based upon the past three months of Bing searches).
    2. 6 Months (Monthly keyword search volume is shown and averaged out based upon the past six months of Bing searches).
    3. Custom (Select a custom time range - see below).

If you leave this checkbox un-checked then you will be shown search volume information for the original keyword phrase and other keyword phrases containing the original keyword phrase as well. For example if the keyword phrase is keyword research software, with the Strict filter checkbox checked you will only be shown the search volume for keyword research software. If you check the Strict filter checkbox you will be shown search volume combined for keyword research software and best keyword research software and free keyword research software. For most accurate data it is suggested to check this checkbox so you will get more accurate search numbers for the keyword phrase alone.

What the Bing Keyword Research Tool can Do

Bing's Keyword Research tool allows you enter in a starting keyword or keyword phrase (you can insert multiple keywords, up to 20, one per line) and in a couple of seconds see the number of searches that keyword(s) get(s). A keyword search with the Bing keyword tool will also produce a list of related keyword phrases which is good for keyword idea generation. You can sort by country or language and export all data. All keyword(s) data comes from organic searches at Bing.com. Data is held as long as a 6 month historical period, and is updated once every two weeks. In order to start using Bing for keyword research you need to have a Bing webmaster account which is 100% free. If you do not, here is the link for the Bing Webmaster Account.

Pros of the Bing Keyword Research Tool

  • Easy to use. Not much of a learning curve at all.
  • Unlike SOME search network keyword tools, you do not have to deposit advertising funds to use the keyword research tool.
  • Keyword data can be downloaded.

The Cons of the Bing Keyword Research Tool

  • Not much in the way of long tail keyword suggestions. Most all keyword phrase suggestions are only 2 - 4 words long which means the Bing keyword research tool is not much good if you are looking to find low competition long tail keyword phrases. Bing is more suited for expanding your list of starting/seed keywords.
  • Since the volume of internet traffic that uses the Bing search engine versus Google is much less, the overall reliability of search volumes should be taken with a HUGE grain of salt. Since people are people, I would assume the relative search volumes of some keywords compared to others should be similar.

Suggested use of the Bing Keyword Research Tool

Assuming you are thinking of using the Bing keyword tool for overall keyword research and NOT for advertising with Bing, the main and only reason I would use the Bing keyword tool is to expand my list of starting/seed keywords which can then be input into a software program designed for long tail keyword ideas such as Infintiy Google Keywords or Keyword Researcher.
